S3 - A Scientific Approach to Managing Complexity

You can't avoid dealing with complexity. The real world is complex, not simple. Intuition and logic alone can get us into trouble when dealing with complexity. So how do we handle them and make good decisions? To accurately describe and solve problems in an increasingly complex world, we need a new language with skills and tools to support it.

Systems Thinking, Scenario Planning, and Simulation provide us with the theory, methods, and tools we need to understand and manage complexity:

  • Systems Thinking provides us with a language that makes understanding complex problems possible
  • Simulation makes evaluating highly complex (real-world) systems models practical
  • Scenario planning makes simulation purposeful for considering the future

Together, they provide an extremely effective way to understand, evaluate, communicate, and resolve complex problems.

The next chapter brings us back into the realm of selling. We consider different selling methods and how they match up with the problem types we've identified. Then we begin to apply the theory, methods, and tools of managing complexity to selling.
